Community Collaboration

Carbon Report believes collaboration with the open-source community drives improved technology and faster innovation. Carbon Report is committed to transparency and demystifying sustainability reporting. We encourage everyone to seek out, develop, and contribute good formulations as we refine the platform.

These guides provide helpful information on emissions calculations seen on our platform, including open source code, up-to-date policies, and legal considerations surrounding the use of and contributions to open source software (OSS) at Carbon Report. We are continuously investing in participation from mathematicians and software developers to review, edit, and improve our formulations.

What is open source?

Our software project is considered “open source,” meaning that anyone is allowed to use, study, modify, and distribute that project for any noncommercial use. Sometimes “open source” is associated with the word “free,” however, “free” in this context means that you are “free to use” the code we’ve developed, but require a licensing agreement to use it commercially. The Carbon Report platform itself is not free to use, but our raw calculations are.

Bug Bounty Program

In the pursuit of building the most trusted sustainability platform, our team is partnering with computer scientists and mathematicians to stress-test our algorithms and help us improve over time. Our goal is to have the most audited carbon reporting methods on earth.

Scope 3 Emissions Breakdown

Scope 3 emissions are split into 15 categories.

Carbon Report encompasses 10 of the 15 most impactful activities, not including the Use of Sold Products, which account for more than 95% of the carbon emissions of making a product. These emissions occur along the value chain, both upstream and downstream.

Purchased Goods and Services

  • Emissions from the production of goods and services purchased by the company (e.g., raw materials, office supplies).

Capital Goods

  • Emissions from the production of capital goods such as machinery, equipment, and buildings that the company uses over time.

Fuel- and Energy-Related Activities (not included in Scope 1 or 2)

  • Emissions from fuel production and electricity generation, including those from extracting, refining, and transporting fuels consumed by the company.

Upstream Transportation and Distribution

  • Emissions from the transportation and distribution of products purchased by the company, up to the point of delivery.

Waste Generated in Operations

  • Emissions from the disposal and treatment of waste generated by the company’s operations (e.g., landfilling, recycling).

Business Travel

  • Emissions from transportation and accommodations used by employees for business purposes.

Employee Commuting

  • Emissions from the transportation of employees between their homes and workplaces.

Upstream Leased Assets

  • Emissions from the operation of assets leased by the company that are not included in Scope 1 or 2.

Downstream Transportation and Distribution

  • Emissions from the transportation and distribution of products sold by the company, after they leave the company’s control.

Processing of Sold Products

  • Emissions from the processing of intermediate products sold by the company by third parties.

Use of Sold Products

  • Emissions that occur during the use of products sold by the company (e.g., emissions from using fossil fuel-powered equipment or vehicles).

End-of-Life Treatment of Sold Products

  • Emissions from the disposal and treatment of products sold by the company after they are used (e.g., waste management, recycling).

Downstream Leased Assets

  • Emissions from the operation of assets leased to other companies.

Franchises

  • Emissions from the operation of franchises, if applicable to the company.

Investments

  • Emissions from investments made by the company, including those from managed assets and portfolios.
